“Students don’t experience our silos. They experience our systems.”
Dr. Joanne W. Lane is an author, educator, and former school and district administrator who helps current and aspiring school leaders understand, align, and lead their special education responsibilities. Drawing on extensive experience across K–12 and higher education, she challenges the traditional view of special education as a separate department, emphasizing its connection to instructional leadership, staffing, budgeting, technology, discipline, and school operations.
Dr. Lane translates special education law into role-aligned leadership practices that strengthen shared accountability, collaboration, and organizational capacity. Her work addresses a fundamental leadership reality: Administrators do not have to make special education decisions to make decisions that affect special education.
Her professional background includes serving as a speech-language pathologist, elementary principal, director of special education, assistant superintendent for student support services, adjunct lecturer, and educational administration internship supervisor. This experience informs her work with school and district leadership teams, university preparation programs, and professional organizations.
Dr. Lane is the author of The Principal’s Special Education Calendar: A Month-by-Month Roadmap to Building Consistency, Equity, and Compliance in Your School (Routledge). Her professional learning programs and training materials have been recognized by the New York State Education Department for best practices.
A recipient of the SAANYS Irving Schwartz Distinguished Retiree Award, she currently serves on the NYCASE Legislative Committee and has held leadership positions with NYSASCD, including President of its Mid-Hudson Affiliate. She earned her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy from Seton Hall University.
